Construction progress of the new White Plains Hospital expansion.
White Plains Hospital is set for a substantial transformation with an ambitious $750 million expansion, led by Suffolk. The project includes a new 10-story building to increase bed capacity and improve patient care facilities, set to be completed by 2028. Enhancements include advanced technology integrations, expanded emergency services, and the creation of new job opportunities, all aimed at meeting the growing healthcare needs in the Hudson Valley region.
White Plains Hospital in New York is set to undergo a significant transformation with a groundbreaking expansion project spearheaded by local contractor Suffolk. The ambitious $750 million expansion will dramatically enhance healthcare access in the Hudson Valley and is expected to be completed by 2028.
This extensive project will involve the construction of a 10-story building, encompassing approximately 500,000 square feet. Upon completion, the hospital’s licensed bed capacity will rise from 292 beds to 436 beds. This surge in capacity will introduce 240 private rooms to the hospital, with 144 of these rooms anticipated to open by 2028.
The expansion will focus on advancing patient care facilities. There will be a dedicated operating room floor, featuring space for an additional 10 state-of-the-art operating rooms. To cater to the increasing demand for emergency services, the new expansion will more than double the size of the existing emergency department.
Suffolk has announced that it will leverage its proprietary artificial intelligence-based steel tracking system known as Live Dimensions throughout this expansion project. Additionally, the construction team will use NavVis handheld scanners to capture high-quality data, which will be integrated into the cloud-based collaboration platform Revizto. These technological enhancements aim to ensure precision and efficiency in the building process.
The expansion is expected to generate approximately 1,000 new job positions, including roles for nurses and technicians. Furthermore, increased parking access is planned, which will include new facilities for patient drop-offs and expanded ambulance bays, enhancing convenience for visitors and medical staff alike.
The new building will be designed with patient comfort in mind, featuring rooms equipped to accommodate medical, surgical, or ICU patients alongside space for family members. A dedicated pediatric emergency department will also be included in the new facility to address the specialized needs of younger patients.
The existing emergency department has faced significant overcrowding, currently serving around 80,000 patients annually, with projections suggesting this number may reach 90,000 by 2025. The expansion project is seen as a crucial step toward relieving pressure on the hospital’s facilities, significantly improving healthcare access for more than two million residents in the Hudson Valley region.
The expansion site is strategically located on the grounds of the former multistory parking garage near key intersections: East Post Road, Maple Street, Davis Road, and South Lexington Avenue. Demolition work for the site has already been completed, with the goal of starting construction swiftly.
The expansion of White Plains Hospital, backed by Suffolk’s construction expertise, is not just an infrastructural improvement but a vital investment in the region’s healthcare future. With advanced facilities, increased capacity, and enhanced services, this development promises to provide better health outcomes for the residents of the Hudson Valley and beyond.
