The new Whataburger restaurant aimed at serving the local community in Knoxville.
Whataburger is set to open three new restaurant locations in Knoxville, Tennessee, including sites in Powell, Cumberland Avenue, and Turkey Creek. The expansion aims to fulfill the demand from local residents for the popular Texan fast-food choice. The Turkey Creek location is currently under construction, while the Powell and Cumberland sites are being redesigned to enhance customer experience. This growth reflects Whataburger’s strategy to increase its presence outside Texas, with 23 existing locations in Tennessee serving to showcase their expanding footprint.
Whataburger, the popular Texas-based burger chain, is gearing up to open three new locations in Knoxville, Tennessee, in an effort to meet the rising customer demand in the area. The new restaurants will be strategically located in Powell, on the Strip, and in Turkey Creek, enhancing convenience for local burger enthusiasts.
The Turkey Creek site, located at 310 Wild Geese Road, is currently under construction as of July 18, 2024. This new location will feature a complete remodel of a former Steak n’ Shake restaurant, equipped with a drive-thru to better serve busy customers.
The Powell location is slated for 500 Emory Road, also a former Steak n’ Shake. Plans for this restaurant include a full remodel as well, along with a two-lane drive-thru to cater to high traffic volumes, especially during peak hours.
Additionally, the restaurant on Cumberland Avenue will be at 1830 Cumberland Avenue, positioned conveniently below student apartments and close to a Raising Cane’s location. Unlike the other two sites, the Cumberland Avenue restaurant will be dine-in only, providing a vibrant atmosphere for patrons. Bidding for this location closed on March 20, 2024.
For the Emory Road location, bidding concluded on May 21, 2024. Initial planning for both the Emory Road and Cumberland Avenue locations reportedly began in October 2023, highlighting the company’s commitment to establishing a strong presence in the Knoxville market.
The Knoxville expansions are being handled by MWB Restaurants, the franchisee responsible for bringing Whataburger to Knoxville. In addition to these new locations, MWB Restaurants has plans for further expansion in Chattanooga and additional sites in Alabama, including Golden, Jasper, and Owens Cross Roads. This growth indicates a strategic expansion plan for Whataburger as they aim to solidify their brand in the southeastern United States.
Currently, Tennessee is home to 23 Whataburger restaurants, with notable concentrations in Clarksville (five locations), Memphis (six locations), and Nashville (12 locations). However, local fans have been longing for more accessibility to the beloved burger chain, which has recently become one of the most sought-after restaurant brands based on input from local readers.
Knoxville’s demand for Whataburger is evidenced by the interest generated among local residents. Until these new locations open their doors, the nearest Whataburger is located in Hermitage, approximately 169 miles away from Knoxville. As the new restaurants begin operations, they are expected to attract not only local patrons but also fans from surrounding areas.
Whataburger, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, operates over 1,000 locations across 16 states. Known for its signature burgers and delicious menu options, the company aims to bring their quality offerings to more communities in Tennessee through these new locations. With the growing popularity and a strong roadmap for expansion, Whataburger looks set to become a staple in Knoxville’s food scene.
The opening of three new Whataburger locations in Knoxville marks an exciting chapter for both the burger chain and local customers. With enhanced accessibility and a commitment to quality dining, what comes next for Whataburger as it continues to grow in Tennessee remains a story to watch.
