Conceptual design of the new Midtown Bus Terminal

News Summary

Tutor Perini has secured a $1.87 billion contract for the Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment in New York City. This project, awarded by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will modernize the 75-year-old bus terminal, adding new facilities and improving commuter experiences. The project is expected to create around 6,000 construction jobs and enhance local infrastructure by including new ramps and storage facilities, with construction commencing in fall 2025.

Tutor Perini Secures $1.87 Billion Contract for Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment

Tutor Perini has successfully secured a guaranteed maximum price contract worth $1.87 billion for the construction of a staging and storage facility as part of the Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment in New York City. The contract was awarded by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, marking a significant milestone in a project that has an overall budget of $10 billion.

Revamping the Aging Infrastructure

The existing Midtown Bus Terminal is now 75 years old and considered functionally obsolete. The redevelopment aims to enhance the commuter experience at what is recognized as the world’s busiest bus terminal, replacing the outdated facility with modern amenities. The upcoming construction will include a new main terminal, a separate storage and staging building, as well as new ramps that will connect to the Lincoln Tunnel.

Facilities to Accommodate Current Needs

Tutor Perini’s responsibilities include the construction of a seven-floor, steel-clad storage and staging facility, designed to accommodate indoor storage for up to 350 buses. This facility will not only serve as a dedicated storage area but will also function as a temporary bus terminal during the ongoing construction of the new main terminal.

The planned ramp will allow for seamless movement of buses between the different levels of this new facility and the Lincoln Tunnel, facilitating efficient traffic flow.

Job Creation and Community Impact

The entire Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment project is expected to generate approximately 6,000 union construction jobs. This job creation is critical for the local economy, offering opportunities for skilled workers in the construction industry.

Construction on the project is poised to begin in the fall of 2025, with the anticipated completion of the first phase by fall 2028. However, the full completion of the project, which includes the new main terminal, is expected to take until 2032. This phased approach is designed to minimize bus idling on local streets and adapt to future growth projections in the region.

Design and Engineering Collaboration

In August 2022, the initial design and engineering work for the project were awarded to A. Epstein & Sons International and Foster+Partners. This collaboration is crucial for ensuring that the facility meets modern architectural and operational standards. Furthermore, AECOM Tishman has been designated as the construction manager for the Dyer Avenue deck-overs project, tasked with overseeing construction activities and ensuring compliance with project timelines and quality standards.

The redevelopment also includes a substantial investment in commercial space, with plans for 67,500 square feet of street-level retail space integrated into the overall design. This element not only aims to enhance the passenger experience but also seeks to provide economic benefits to the surrounding community.

Conclusion and Future Prospects

As New York City continues to witness significant growth in population and transit demands, the Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment is poised to be a vital component in improving public transportation infrastructure. The collaboration among various stakeholders, the phased approach to construction, and the focus on job creation highlight the project’s commitment to meeting both current and future needs.

With the ground already broken for the Dyer Avenue deck-overs portion in late May 2025, the redevelopment signifies a considerable advancement in the city’s efforts to modernize its transportation facilities and provide a better commuting experience for millions of riders in the years to come.
