KWS Seeds is set to construct its most advanced greenhouse research facility in Kimberly, Idaho, with the goal of enhancing the performance, profitability, and sustainability of sugarbeet farming. As part of the project, two new greenhouse facilities will be developed. One will be dedicated to seedling production specifically for sugarbeet trialing, while the other will focus on advanced research into plant disease control. These upgrades underscore a commitment to improving plant resilience and enhancing agricultural output.
The new facility aims to utilize ultramodern technology to propel variety development to new heights and provide agronomic solutions to farmers dealing with various challenges in sugarbeet production. The design is set to include innovative vernalization chambers, which allow precise control over essential growing conditions like temperature, humidity, and light. This level of detail is crucial for successful seed development and overall plant health.
The project is being constructed in partnership with Ceres Greenhouse Solutions, which is managing the construction process and overseeing high-tech installations. Their efforts are directed towards ensuring precision climate control and energy efficiency, which are integral to modern greenhouse practices.
The research facility will be equipped with proprietary heat pump systems, energy curtains, and the Ceres SunSense automation system, all of which will provide real-time environmental monitoring. This setup aims to create optimal growing conditions, thereby increasing the productivity of sugarbeet crops.
Research at the new facility will target the development of disease-resistant hybrids and increased crop yields. Specific attention will be given to creating hybrids that can withstand diseases such as Curly Top and Rhizoctonia, as well as working on herbicide-tolerant programs. These efforts should lead to agricultural practices that are not only efficient but also sustainable.
KWS Seeds previously expanded its research capabilities in the Kimberly area in 2019 by investing in a new seed processing facility.
