Construction underway for the Golticlay onshore wind farm, set to contribute to Scotland's renewable energy goals.
RWE has officially started construction on the Golticlay onshore wind farm in Caithness, which will feature 11 turbines with a capacity of 62.7 MW. This renewable energy project aims to provide enough electricity to power approximately 84,000 homes annually by the end of 2026, contributing significantly to Scotland’s renewable energy initiatives and local economy, creating job opportunities, and advancing green technology collaboration.
RWE, recognized as the UK’s foremost power generator, has officially initiated construction of the Golticlay onshore wind farm in Caithness, Scotland. This project marks a significant step forward in the advancement of renewable energy within the region and is located about 5 kilometers northwest of Lybster.
The Golticlay wind farm is designed to have a total capacity of 62.7 megawatts (MW), featuring a total of 11 modern wind turbines. Each turbine is quite impressive, standing 180 meters tall from the base to the tip of the blades and capable of producing an individual output of 5.7 MW. Once fully operational, which is anticipated by the end of 2026, the wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 84,000 Scottish homes annually.
The Golticlay wind farm is set to contribute significantly to both Scotland’s renewable energy goals and the local economy. The construction will not only create jobs but also support local businesses through contracted works. The main civil engineering contractor managing the construction is Farrans, which plans to employ around 25 people on-site during its project phase. This collaboration is expected to foster additional economic benefits for the surrounding community.
Golticlay is just one of several wind projects currently being developed by RWE in Scotland. It joins an impressive lineup that includes the Enoch Hill wind farm with a capacity of 70 MW, Camster II at 36 MW, and Strathy Wood, also at 70 MW. Collectively, these four projects will showcase significant growth in renewable energy production, totaling an installed capacity of 231 MW once they are all operational.
In terms of technology, RWE has partnered with the Nordex Group to manufacture and supply the 11 wind turbines for the Golticlay project. Specifically, the Nordex Delta4000 series N149/5.7 turbines have been chosen for this endeavor, and they will be supplied through the nearby port of Wick, facilitating efficient logistics and transport for the project.
The Golticlay wind farm is not just a step towards sustainable energy but also a vessel for local collaboration. The regional efforts aim to drive greener energy solutions while providing substantial community benefits. By involving local contractors and workforce elements, the project is strengthening its ties to the community, leading to broader implications for sustainable development in the area.
The start of the Golticlay onshore wind farm construction signifies a pivotal moment for renewable energy in Caithness, Scotland. Through the utilization of modern technology, a commitment to local economic growth, and the potential to provide clean energy to thousands of homes, this project stands out as a model for future ventures in the renewable energy sector. With full power generation expected by late 2026, the community and region can look forward to the positive impacts that this wind farm will bring.
