Cybersecurity Threats Impacting Real Estate & Construction Industry

Thailand, August 12, 2025

News Summary

The construction and real estate sectors are grappling with rising cybersecurity threats such as phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. A recent report highlights a decline in attack campaigns targeting these industries, with a noted increase in ransomware victims. The report stresses the need for enhanced cybersecurity strategies as digital integration grows, as well as the importance of leveraging emerging technologies to safeguard sensitive information against evolving threats.

Cybersecurity and the Real Estate & Construction Industries: Recent Threats and Insights

The real estate and construction industries are currently navigating a complex cybersecurity landscape that has seen notable developments over the past three months. A recent report highlights the alarming rise in cybersecurity threats faced by these industries, especially regarding attack campaigns and ransomware incidents.

Decline in Attack Campaigns But Growing Concerns

In the recent analysis of the last 90 days, the real estate and construction sector has been part of 2 out of 16 observed attack campaigns, equating to just 12.5%. This marks a significant drop from 25% in the prior 90 days, signaling a changing pattern in threat activities. The two campaigns in question occurred in May and July, identified with suspected actors operating from China and Thailand. While one of the campaigns, attributed to the Chinese group Volt Typhoon, targeted multiple countries, the Thai-speaking group CCTH2501 focused specifically on Thailand. Notably, Thailand was the only nation impacted by both campaigns.

Types of Attacks Targeted

Both attack campaigns primarily targeted web applications and operating systems, with Volt Typhoon also compromising routers and network monitoring tools. Fortunately, the real estate and construction sectors faced minimal impact from more sophisticated and persistent threat campaigns. Out of 16 campaigns noted, only two affected this sector.

Ransomware Victimization on the Rise

In the last three months, the report indicates that there were a total of 121 ransomware victims in the real estate and construction industries, comprising 8.7% of all ransomware victims observed during this period. Despite a 16% decrease in victims from the previous quarter, the sector’s share of total victims increased slightly from 7.2% to 8.4%. The initial months showed substantial ransomware activity with several peaks, suggesting ongoing interest from cybercriminals.

Chatter on the Dark Web

Analysis of mentions in underground and dark web channels revealed that the real estate and construction industry experienced 1,176 mentions, accounting for 1.9% of all detected industry chatter. The most frequent topics included data leaks, ransomware, and data breaches, which have surged particularly in the last month.

Trends indicated a significant increase in data leaks, up from 105 to 171 mentions, suggesting exposed information due to cloud misconfigurations or third-party breaches. Likewise, ransomware discussion jumped from 77 to 172, pointing to a targeted approach toward property management and construction IT.

Vulnerabilities and Future Challenges

Despite the threats, the real estate and construction sectors ranked 12th out of 14 in terms of detected vulnerabilities, holding 2.6% of all industry-linked Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs). Recent trends revealed drops in injection attacks while Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) incidents rose sharply, alongside a steady risk from Remote Code Execution (RCE).

The Importance of Cybersecurity Investment

As industries evolve, the real estate and construction sectors must prioritize cybersecurity to protect sensitive information and maintain trust with clients. The emergence of technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning shows promise for enhancing future protection strategies against an ever-evolving threat landscape.
