An artistic rendering of the future Citadel headquarters tower, set to transform the Miami skyline.
Citadel has obtained FAA approval for its ambitious new 1,049-foot headquarters tower in Miami. This mixed-use development will feature over 1.4 million square feet of office space and a luxury hotel, transforming the Brickell skyline. Scheduled to begin construction soon, the project aims to enhance business growth in the area and strengthen Citadel’s presence in Miami’s financial sector.
Citadel has received the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its planned 1,049-foot skyscraper set to reshape the Miami skyline. This towering structure will be developed on a 2.5-acre site at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive and is expected to commence construction later this year, pending final permits and a contracted construction firm.
The new headquarters will encompass an impressive 1.7 million square feet in total, with over 1.4 million square feet designated for office space. The design of the tower will be handled by the acclaimed architectural firm, Foster + Partners. In addition to office accommodations, the structure will also host a 212-room hotel that occupies its upper levels, indicating a multi-functional approach to the development.
Beyond just office and hotel space, the building will provide a variety of amenities including fine dining restaurants, a spacious ballroom, and extensive event facilities. One of the standout features will be an illuminated crown perched atop the building, complemented by a landscaped amenity deck that promises to offer stunning views of the Bay Area. The inclusion of a continuous public baywalk along the eastern edge of the property will not only enhance public access but also integrate the tower into the vibrant Miami waterfront.
Citadel’s ambitious plans for the tower indicate that three tower cranes, the first of their kind to be approved in Miami, are set to rise nearly 1,300 feet tall. These cranes, scheduled for installation this fall, will be situated on the east, west, and south sides of the construction site, representing a significant engineering achievement. The project will also include five levels of below-grade and podium back-of-house space to support operational needs.
Citadel is partnering with Related Companies, a well-known developer based in New York, to bring this project to fruition. The engineering team consists of notable firms including AAI Architects as the architect of record, Thornton Tomasetti for structural and resiliency engineering, Langan for geotechnical engineering, and Kimley-Horn and Associates for civil and traffic engineering. The collaboration of these expert teams aims to address the complexity and scale of the project.
The site has a rich history, having undergone various redevelopment proposals since major structures were cleared in the early 1970s. The property was acquired for over $360 million by Ken Griffin in 2022, marking a significant investment in Miami’s real estate market. Citadel’s relocation from Chicago to Miami is expected to significantly enhance the financial sector of the area, driven by concerns over public safety in Chicago and the favorable business environment Miami offers. Currently, Citadel employs approximately 450 staff in Miami and plans to expand its workforce with this new headquarters.
Looking ahead, future phases of the project will include plans for additional office space, residential units, and parking facilities. This reflects Citadel’s commitment to not only occupying a premier location within the city but also contributing to Miami’s overall growth and development. The move signifies a strategic shift from their previous four-floor occupancy at the Southeast Financial Center, pushing Citadel towards greater operational capabilities in its new home.
