RapidWorks names Matt DePaolis president after acquiring CRO Software; Collective Waste Solutions buys Fin‑Wall; City of Calgary changes pickup schedules and cuts blue‑cart fees under EPR
RapidWorks has appointed Matt DePaolis as president following its acquisition of CRO Software, a move aimed at expanding the company’s reach in waste management and recycling technology. The change comes as the company broadens its product portfolio for heavy equipment service providers and builds a larger team to support customers worldwide. Posted by Chris Sweeney, Managing Editor.
RapidWorks expansion and leadership
RapidWorks is a Boston-based provider of field management solutions for heavy construction equipment service providers. RapidWorks appointed Matt DePaolis as president. The appointment follows RapidWorks’ acquisition of CRO Software. CRO Software is a Calgary-based provider of waste and recycling industry software. RapidWorks says it is accelerating its mission to serve all heavy equipment service providers across multiple verticals, including concrete pumping, crane services, waste management and recycling.
The company noted growth under current leadership, with RapidWorks CEO Tim Curran saying the company tripled in size during his two years as CEO and that adding DePaolis is a key step in scaling the business to meet customer needs. RapidWorks said the company has an expanded product portfolio and a dedicated team, and is building a stronger foundation to deliver greater value for heavy equipment service providers worldwide.
Matt DePaolis began his career as a software engineer. After three years as a software engineer, DePaolis left and moved into the field to work as a general contractor building homes. DePaolis later joined Vela Systems, a software provider for field management in construction, which was later acquired by Autodesk. Most recently, DePaolis was president of Repsly, a retail software-as-a-service company serving both field teams and back-office operations. According to RapidWorks, DePaolis led Repsly through a period of rapid growth and strengthened product, customer service and operational execution. Repsly’s growth culminated in Repsly’s acquisition by Cuadrilla Capital earlier this year. DePaolis said he is excited to build on that momentum with the team.
Collective Waste Solutions buys Fin‑Wall Site Services
Calgary, Alberta-based Collective Waste Solutions has purchased all assets of Fin‑Wall Site Services. Posted by Tess Kazdin, Digital Editor. Fin‑Wall Site Services has provided commercial and construction waste management services in Calgary since 1989. Collective says this acquisition strengthens its position in the commercial waste sector and supports continued growth in partnership with MWM Environmental.
The former owner, Stephen G. Brown, said the transition marks a new phase under different ownership and brand and that employees will have greater opportunities and customers will benefit from more reliable and consistent service. Collective Waste Solutions CEO Jim MacPherson said the company is proud to continue growth in Calgary and to incorporate Fin‑Wall’s resources into its operations. As part of the transition, Fin‑Wall’s operations will be rebranded under Collective Waste Solutions Inc. Fin‑Wall’s employees have been fully integrated into Collective Waste Solutions.
The transaction was supported by Concentric Equity Partners. Comerica Bank provided debt financing for the transaction. DLA Piper served as legal counsel to Collective Waste Solutions. A related municipal merger was noted separately in industry updates.
City of Calgary adjusts pickup schedules and introduces EPR changes
The City of Calgary will be adjusting recycling, organics and waste pick up in some areas as they add routes to accommodate a number of new communities. In a press release Tuesday, city officials asked residents to see if their blue, green and black bin pick-up days are changing starting Tuesday, April 22. Natalia Gonzalez is Waste Diversion Specialist in Waste & Recycling Services. The city warned that a collection day may move from Wednesday to Thursday or may shift to the opposite week and encouraged Calgarians to visit calgary.ca/cartschedule and sign up for reminders. Information about waste pick-up is also available with the My Garbage Day App, which allows users to set up reminders and alerts and check the schedule using their address.
Starting next week organics pick up will return to weekly collection with spring yard clean up soon underway. Green bins need to be filled before using brown organics bags. Brown organics bags can be left a half metre away from other bins with the tops rolled closed. Brown organics bags need to be light enough to lift with one hand.
Blue cart fees cut under Extended Producer Responsibility
Calgarians will start saving roughly $7 per month on their blue cart program charge as the city implements Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules. Councillors approved changes to Calgary’s waste bylaw to reduce the monthly blue cart charge. The monthly blue cart charge will be dropped from $9.34 and $9.52 in 2025 and 2025, respectively, to $2.17 each month. The changes will start April 1, 2025, to coincide with the Alberta Extended Producer Responsibility system.
To start, the EPR changes will only apply to single-family homes in Calgary. Under EPR, responsibility for managing certain recyclables and hazardous materials transfers from local governments to producers, like manufacturers and retailers. The city said a small monthly charge continues to be required because some parts of Calgary’s current service are not obligated to be funded by producers. EPR is intended to encourage producers to design and produce less packaging waste and choose materials that are less toxic and easier to recycle.
Ward 14 Coun. Peter Demong has been working on the EPR file for the better part of eight years and said the program has been a long time coming. The EPR system will be in place for three different types of products: packaging and paper products; hazardous materials and special products; and single-use and rechargeable household batteries. The EPR program is planned for implementation in multi-family properties by October 2026. Demong said multi-residential implementation is later and will have another process going forward to try to bring multi-residential into the same program. Demong said Calgarians could see a very marginal increase on products as producers make changes to their packaging and gave examples of potential price increases on simple items. The City of Calgary expects to monitor the implementation over the next year. A report on potential changes to the rate structure is expected in Q2 2026.
